David W. Evans, 82, died Friday, February 22, 2013, in West Palm Beach, Florida. He was born on April 11, 1930, to Paul and Dorothy (Wilson) Evans in South Bend, Indiana. He married Zola Schad on November 1, 1953.
A long time Perrysburg resident, Mr. Evans graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1948 and enlisted in the Army National Guard and served in various units during his tenure before leaving in the early 1960s.
Mr. Evans worked for United Airlines before joining his father in the family insurance adjusting business in 1958. He expanded the business, Evans Adjustment and Survey Co., to the Port of Toledo, where he used his boating and insurance knowledge to include marine cargo surveys for incoming shipments, most notably Volkswagen. He also started System Installers of Toledo Inc. as a result of his Volkswagen connection.
After the downturn in shipping at the Port in the late ’70s, Mr. Evans became the head of maintenance for Perrysburg Schools, retiring in 1996.
Mr. Evans was very active with Perrysburg First United Methodist Church and served as lay leader, administrative chair, choir member, and a building trustee. Later he served First United Methodist Church in Moore Haven, Florida, as a choir member and the chairman of the building committee.
As a long time boater, Mr. Evans cruised many waters of the United States by himself and with friends and family, enticing them to enjoy the boating lifestyle. He also enjoyed sharing the family cottage on Patten Lake in Canada.
Mr. Evans is survived by his sons, Nelson (Felicia) Evans of Perrysburg, and Lee Evans (Susan Jones) of Toledo; grandchildren, Nicholas Evans of Seattle, Washington, Stephanie (Nicholas) DelieCave of Cincinnati, Ohio, Julia (Jose) Borja-Espino of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Justin Evans of Perrysburg; great grandchildren, Adelyn and Jose Borja-Espino; sister, Cynthia Bayer of Marathon, Florida, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Zola.
A memorial service will be held May 5, at 2 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, 200 West Second Street, Perrysburg. A private burial will take place at Fort Meigs Cemetery.
