Philip Anthony Horvath

Philip Anthony Horvath, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and professor, passed away peacefully on the evening of Friday, November 15, 2024, surrounded by his devoted family. Phil was born on October 4, 1940, in South Bend, Indiana, to William and Helen Horvath, who preceded him in death. He was 84 years old.

Phil is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Joan; his children, Tony, Alex, and Ryan; his grandchildren, Jessica, Shannon, Riley, Ella, Connor, and Vera; and his siblings, Chuck, Jane, Jean, and Steve. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A lifelong learner and educator, Phil graduated from Washington Clay High School in 1958. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Indiana University and later completed his Doctorate Degree at Kent State University. Before embarking on his academic career, Phil proudly served six-and-a-half years in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant (E5) and receiving an honorable discharge in 1965.

Phil spent 47 years as a professor at Bradley University as Robert T. Stvenson/PNC Professor of Finance, Chair FQM at Bradley University. Prior to his time at Bradley, he taught at Indiana University at South Bend for five years. A brilliant and dynamic educator, he taught courses in business, finance, mathematics, statistics, and quantitative methods. He was instrumental in the development of academic programs, including serving as a Fellow and contributing to the university's executive development initiatives. His passion for teaching and research left a lasting impact on his students, colleagues, and the academic community.

Beyond his professional achievements, Phil was deeply involved in his community. While raising his family, he served as the local Police Commissioner, embodying his commitment to civic engagement and leadership.

Known for his voracious appetite for reading and his inquisitive mind, Phil remained intellectually curious and actively engaged in research even in his final days. He was a man of great integrity, wisdom, and kindness—a true inspiration to those fortunate enough to know him.

In accordance with Phil’s wishes, private services will be held for close family members. The family has requested no donations but encourages those who knew Phil to take a moment to honor his memory in their own way.

Phil’s legacy of love, learning, and service will continue to resonate in the lives of those he touched. He will be remembered with deep affection and profound gratitude.
