Sgt. Mark A. Simpson, 40, of Fort Hood Texas, originally from Peoria, passed away Sunday September 26, 2010 in Kandahar, Afghanistan of wounds he suffered when insurgents attacked his military vehicle with an improvised explosive device. One other soldier was also killed in the attack.
He was born in Peoria, February 3, 1970 to George and Carol Sheaffer Simpson. He married his wife Aletha in Peoria. She survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Shantallia, Krystin, and Jamie Simpson all at home; his parents, George and Carol Simpson of Peoria, one brother, George F. Simpson of Missoula, MT and three sisters, Beth (and Doug) Camp of Bartlett, TX Carol (and Jim) Goewey of Spring Bay and Amy (and Allen) Lee of East Peoria. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. One son, Mark A. Simpson, Jr preceded him in death.
Sgt. Simpson was born in Peoria and graduated from Richwoods High School. After working as a security guard, truck driver, and in food management, he joined the U.S. Army in 2005, and served tours at Fort Drum and Fort Hood before deploying to the Afghanistan war.
His awards and decorations include Bronze Star Medal; Purple Heart Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star; Iraq Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; NATO Medal; Combat Action Badge; Driver and Mechanical Badge and Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-Wheeled Vehicles; and Expert Riffle Badge.
Funeral services were held Friday, October 8, 2010 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen, TX with burial in Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at El Vista Baptist Church in Peoria with Rev. Joey Watt officiating. A visitation will also be at the church on Monday from 3:00 till 7:00 p.m. Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria has assisted the family with local arrangements.
