John H. Parks

John Parks was born on April 19, 1915. He grew up on his parent’s farm outside Minonk, Illinois and it was here that his interest in all things mechanical began. He was also a self-taught musician, who played saxophone and clarinet in the Freddy Steven’s Band. He married Mildred E. Morey in 1942 and began a 42 year career as a mechanical engineer at Caterpillar Tractor Company, where he was credited for over 40 patents relating to fuel injection systems.

Following retirement he was the co-founder, along with Gary Bragg, of Wheels O’ Time Museum, spending many years developing numerous displays, and he spearheaded the effort to save the “Old 886” steam locomotive, now a prominent feature at the museum. Other endeavors included initiating the “Bring Home the Duryea” campaign and restoration of the Peoria County Courthouse Clock. Both the 1898 Duryea Peoria Motor Trap and the Courthouse Clock are now on display at the Peoria Riverfront Museum.

After retiring from Wheels O’ Time, he created an antique clock repair business in Dunlap, which he continued to operate until reaching 101 years old.

His wife and son Robert preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca (Frank) Bellrose of Colorado, and son John of Dunlap, along with two grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no services.
