He was born Dec. 1, 1946 in Peoria to William and Emma (Behrens) Knapp. He married Kathy Ommen on May 16, 1970 in Peoria. She survives along with two daughters: Sarah (Dave) Siegrist of Bloomington, Monica Knapp of Wilmington, one son, Ben (Tanya) Knapp of Washington, seven grandchildren: Emily, Jeremy, Megan, Logan, Anthony, Justin, Benjamin, two great-grandsons: Oliver and Finn, two sisters: Joan (Greg) Evans of Rocky River, OH, Sharon Knapp of West Peoria, and two brothers: Bernie (Mary) Knapp of West Peoria and Dave (Nancy) Knapp of Carol Stream, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers: Joseph as an infant, and Bob Knapp.
Gary was a United States Army Veteran. He worked at Caterpillar, Inc. for 38 years retiring in 2003. He was a member of St. Marks Catholic Church and was active in Cursillo. He was also an active leader in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for many years.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 1, 2018 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. A funeral mass will be Monday, July 2, 2018 at 11 a.m. at St. Marks Catholic Church in West Peoria. Additional visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the church.
Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery with military honors.
