She was born on August 12, 1932, in Peoria, Illinois, to Raymond and Bertha (Stiefermann) Overend.
Dorothy married Charles Lowery (surviving) on March 19, 1951. Also surviving are their five children, Janice (Rick) Swan, Dustin (Karen) Lowery, Cherry (Gary) McCoy, Julie (John) Coffey, Daren (Elizabeth) Lowery; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Kathryn Hays and Suzanne Johnson, twin brother, Donald Overend and granddaughter, Tara Coffey.
Dorothy was an avid seamstress. One of her greatest pleasures was completing sewing projects for family members and friends which included clothing repairs, complete outfits, and especially making doll and bear clothing for her grandchildren. Dorothy excelled at creating embroidered baby comforters and tablecloths. Her embroidery work was detailed and beautiful.
Dorothy was a devoted Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. When it came to devotion though, nothing topped games played by her husband, children and grandchildren. She was always at her husband’s side keeping score and enthusiastically cheering at the 100s of fastpitch games that he, their sons, son-in-laws, and grandson played. She and Chuck supported their children and grandchildren in all of their adventures and pursuits.
Dorothy and Chuck spent many enjoyable hours playing cards with family and friends while children played around them. They both shared their love of cats throughout their marriage. Dorothy was a proud 1950 graduate of Manual High School. She and Chuck were heavily involved in the success of their 50th school reunion.
Most importantly, Dorothy was a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her family was always front and center for her. As a homemaker, she worked diligently to provide a safe, comfortable place for all family and friends.
A private funeral and burial will be held at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria.
