Ruby Lee Thomas Sykes, 85, died on February 25, 2015 at Golden Living Center-Dunwoody in Atlanta, Georgia. Born in Cross Anchor – Enoree, South Carolina on June 2, 1929, Ruby grew up in Spruce Pine, North Carolina and moved to Pensacola upon marrying James Aubrey Sykes in 1954. She is the daughter of Charles Ewings and Flora Jane Thomas.
Ruby was a lifelong homemaker, raising four children and four grand-children. Ruby was very industrious, enjoyed classic country music, Elvis and NASCAR, especially when Dale Earnheart, Richard Petty and Carl Edwards were behind the wheel. She was liked by all who knew her, and could always bring a smile to anyone’s face with her remarkable sensitivity. Ruby was a loving mother and grandmother to her family and will be dearly missed; leaving a vacuum in our lives that can never be filled.
Ruby is survived by her son Jerry of Jacksonville, FL, daughter Elaine of Pensacola, grandsons Jamie Lee Sykes and Jacob Lou Sykes, both of Jacksonville, FL; Michael Wayne Pauley of Richmond, MO, Roger Dennis Yates, Jr. of Tallahassee, FL, David McKinnon Yates of Pensacola, granddaughters Jennifer Lin Sykes of Jacksonville, FL, Aimee Darlene Mitchell of Hanceville, AL, and Deborah Darlene Yates of Pensacola. Ruby is predeceased in death by her father Charles, mother Flora, husband James Aubrey, daughter Betty, and son James Melvin.
Ruby was laid to rest with her husband and returned to her Heavenly Father on Friday March 6, 2015 at Barrancas National Cemetery, Naval Air Station, Pensacola. Bayview Fisher-Pou on Scenic Highway in Pensacola was in charge of her burial arrangements. Donations of any amount to help the family defray final expenses would be greatly appreciated.
