Marjorie Petty Harris entered the gates of Heaven on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018. Born in Hickman, KY, she was the daughter of the late Howard Nathaniel Petty and Mada Casteel Petty. She married her high-school sweetheart, Rufus Winfred Harris in January 1954. Mrs. Harris had a strong devotion to God, family, and friends. Though she worked in retail and business throughout her life, her love was that of being a homemaker, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a long-time member of Eastmont Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL before moving to Pensacola, FL in 2006 where she attended Olive Baptist Church. The family wishes to thank Dr. Alicia Chen, and the staffs of the Veranda of Pensacola and Emerald Coast Hospice for the wonderful care and concern provided to Mrs. Harris and the family. A special thanks to Kat, Shelly, and Roxanne at the Veranda, and her hospice nurses Cheryl, Kelsey, and Elizabeth. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers Raymond and Gene Petty, sisters Johnnie Petty Bartleston and Betty Jane Petty Jones, her husband’s parents Lloyd Homer Harris and Vivian Davis Harris, brother-in-law Harlan Harris, sisters-in-law Madeline Harris Allen and Gwen Harris Nichols, and son-in-law Ray Dawson Hessler. Mrs. Harris is survived by her children Teresa Hessler of Harvest, AL, Andrew (Dianne) Harris of Pensacola, FL, and Richard Wayne Harris (Ida) of Newton AL; grandchildren Karyn (Joseph) Hicks, Kenneth (Audra) Hessler, Melissa (Herby) Mabire, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Bostwick; great-grandchildren Kathryn Hessler, Caroline Hessler, Sophie Kelly, Lawrence Kelly, Audrey Mabire, and Jonathan Bostwick and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of her home-going will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, Pensacola, FL with Dr. Stan Lewis officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.before the services. Interment will follow at the same location. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hurricane Michael Relief through Olive Baptist Church 1836 East Olive Road Pensacola, FL 32514.
