Dorothy Nell Thompson, nee Merrill, age 94 died peacefully in her home on December 8, 2017. Dorothy (Dot) was born on November 20, 1923 in Laurel Hill, Florida. As a young woman, she moved to Tampa, where she met her husband, Ernest Thompson. Ernest was a career Navy man and the couple moved with their children many times over the years, settling in Pensacola when Ernest retired in 1969. Dot was a full-time mother and homemaker and an excellent seamstress, who often surprised her children with handmade outfits or stuffed toys when they came home from school. In the early 1970s, Dot became an in-demand teacher of the Bishop Method of Clothing Construction at fabric stores throughout northwest Florida and Alabama. She briefly managed Derrel's of Pensacola on North Davis Highway. Although Dot could make anything, her specialty was fine lingerie and she kept her female relatives, friends, and clients in exquisite nightgowns for many years.
Dot is survived by her daughters Marcia (Paul) Alley, Dannie Brewer, Ann (Mark) Hammond, son Joseph (Marsha) Thompson, grandchildren Paul (Amy) Alley, Lindsay (Lee) Turvey, Dannie Carole (Braxton) Underwood, Glenn Brewer, Marcella Hammond (Ross Glanc), Andrew Hammond, Mary (Tim) Inacio, and Deana Thompson, and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest, son Matthew Thompson, her six brothers and sisters, and her parents.
Visitation will be at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel on Thursday, December 14 at 1:00 pm. A celebration of her life will be at 2:00, followed by interment in Bayview Memorial Park.
