After a courageous battle with ovarian cancer for almost 5 years, Julia Cochran Waits, 78, of Cropwell, Alabama, experienced her ultimate healing at 10:57 AM on February 14, 2024. She peacefully left her embattled earthly body to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, healed and pain free for all eternity. She was born on November 26, 1945, in Walnut Grove, Etowah County, Alabama. She grew up in the Walnut Grove community and was a member of the 1964 class of Walnut Grove High School.
Julia later became known for her giftedness with creating fun and beautiful things with her hands. Her little crocheted animals brought joy to infants and children all over the world. When arthritis took the crochet needle from her hands, she discovered a new passion for machine quilting. With the help and training of her beloved friend, Karen, she lovingly made lap quilts, nap quilts, and little pillows for her favorite people, all made with love and her own two hands. Finally, this past December, her last project was to make a little pillow for each of her ten great-grands to open in front of her for her last Christmas.
Julia is survived by her loving husband, Harvey Waits, her fur baby, Tubby, her daughters Cheryl (Brian) McElwee, Carrye (Steve) Pope, Denise Stephens, Ashley Dyer, her son David (Angie) Putman, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Fredred Lee (Pete) Cochran, sisters Glenda (Billy Ray) Robershaw, Sharon (Joe) Burden, Kathy Cochran, Martha (Benny) Foxx, sister-in-law Jimmie Sue Cochran, and a host of nieces and nephews. Julia was preceded in death by her father, Fredred Lee Cochran Sr., mother Louise Cochran, infant brother Billy Cochran, sister Annette (Leon) Cornelius, and brothers Rodney Cochran and James Cochran.
Perhaps the most important work of Julia's life was taking her children to church every time the doors were open and instilling in them a love for the gathering together of likeminded believers which has remained true in each of their lives to this day. She found great joy in her faith. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Pell City. It was from this community of believers that Julia and Harvey found a family of friends who would walk with them through cancer and other life-altering illnesses. These precious brothers and sisters would often drop everything to give rides, cook meals, walk Tubby, cut grass, or anything else that needed doing. Also, their sweet neighbors in LeLoLa offered the same compassion and generosity of spirit and could often be seen passing each other on the back porch to bring cornbread and pies, soups and chili, tomatoes and squash, and to care for Tubby when Julia and Harvey couldn't be there to do it.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, February 24, at 3:00 PM at New Hope Baptist Church in Pell City, Alabama. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until the start of the celebration at the church. A private scattering and interment of Julia's ashes will be held at a later date.
The family would like to express appreciation to Dr. Matthew Tucker & the staff at Alabama Oncology, Dr. Michael Dupre & the staff at Complete Health, the nurses and aides at Lakeside Hospice, and a special thanks to Curt Eddy and the staff at Mainstreet Drugs in Pell City.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Gideons International in Julia's memory.
