The retired US Marine Sargent Major personified the meaning of the “Greatest Generation.” He was just 20 years old in February of 1945 when he landed on the shore of Iwo Jima with the US Marines. He saw with his own eyes the most iconic scene in US military history, the American flag raised by the Marines on Iwo Jima Mount Suribachi. The epic World War II beach landing was the beginning of a remarkable 28 year Marine career that spanned the Korean and Vietnam wars. He felt specially rewarded serving as a drill instructor helping form young men into Marines. Over his long life, he actively supported and attended many Marines Corps and Veterans Events. He was recognized as one of just a select few Veterans who were actively deployed in both World War II and Vietnam. He lived out his life as both a proud American and a “true Marine”.
George was married for 55 years to the late Leona Jones Boutwell. He is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Boutwell and Brenda Rae (Joel); 7 grandchildren; and 10 of great-grandchildren.
