William (Bill) M. Kremer , 92, died peacefully in his residence Saturday, February 12, after a brief illness. Bill, a native of Birmingham, graduated from Ensley High School and Howard College, and was a sales representative for US Steel for forty years. He was also a Navy veteran in the Korean War era.
Bill, an Alabama state champion in the 100 and 220 yard dashes and the long jump, ran track for Howard College. As a long-time basketball referee and fast pitch softball ump, he was known to generations of Birmingham youth as “Red,” for his flaming red hair. He had a great passion for barbershop music and was president of men’s barbershop chapters in Montgomery and Birmingham. He was also known for leading a church ministry to special needs children during his tenure in Montgomery. He was a faithful member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church (SMBC) in Birmingham.
An avid outdoorsman, as a teenager during the Second World War years Bill led Boy Scouts from Alabama into the Canadian boundary waters for weeks at a time. He was an accomplished fisherman and tennis player, and spent frequent weeks enjoying the charms of Gulf Shores, Alabama. His warm, magnetic personality won him a great host of friends and admirers throughout the state.
Bill is survived by his son Richard (Melissa) and his daughter Karen (Ernie) and by three grandchildren, Stewart (Arielle), Mark (Amanda) and Clara, and by two great-grandchildren, Cash and Sam. He is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Gertrude Kremer of Foley, Alabama, and by his beloved wife of over sixty years, Eleanor (Ellie) Steele Kremer, to whom he ministered devotedly in her declining years.
The family would like to thank Affinity Hospice for their steadfast and loving care of Bill during his last years. We also thank the Encouragement Team of SMBC, who ministered to Bill faithfully, and his neighbors, who became part of his extended family.
Contributions to honor Bill Kremer’s life can be made to Shades Mountain Baptist Church of Birmingham or Vineville Baptist Church of Macon, Georgia, where Bill’s son Richard is pastor.
The funeral service will be private. However, the family would like to express their gratitude to the great host of you who have sent expressions of condolence, support and admiration for “Mr. Bill.”
