Robert Thomas (Bob) Ryan, Jr., M.D., passed away on Friday evening, February 4, 2022. He was born July 17, 1934, in Bessemer, Alabama, to Robert T. Ryan, Sr., and Virginia Armbrester Ryan, both of whom predeceased him many years ago. At the age of three, Bob’s family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where his father started a wholesale tobacco products business.
Bob attended public schools in Knoxville and was in the first graduating class of Fulton High School. He obtained a B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He then obtained his medical degree at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis. He was a member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity.
During his third year of medical school, he met Elizabeth E. (Betsy) Winn of Clarksville, Tennessee. They were married July 11, 1959. After completing a residency in internal medicine at UAB in 1962, he served two years as a physician in the Medical Corps of the United States Army. Following a nephrology fellowship at UAB, he worked at Lloyd Noland Hospital in Fairfield as an internist.
In 1969, Bob made a major career change and began a three-year residency in radiology at the Baptist Medical Centers. He then practiced with Radiology Associates of Birmingham until his retirement in 1996. He worked primarily at Brookwood Hospital and was there the day it opened in March 1973. He was also on the staffs of St. Vincent’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital and Healthsouth. He belonged to the various local, state and national organizations related to his specialty. He was a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and served a term as President of the Alabama Chapter of the ACR.
The most important event in his life was when he came to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ at age ten. He was an active member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and sang in the choir for thirty years. For over twenty years, he enjoyed being involved with the Christian Medical Ministry of Alabama. He also loved to travel and was blessed to be able to travel extensively throughout the United States as well as overseas numerous times.
The main joy of his retirement was the opportunity to attend many, many recitals, sporting events and other activities of his nine grandchildren to whom he was affectionately known as “Papa.”
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betsy Winn Ryan and three daughters: Wendy (Alton) Irwin, Ginger (Bart) Combs and Sally (Billy) Reiser, all of Birmingham. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Briarwood Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 10, at 11:00 am with Reverend Benny Parks officiating. Visitation for family and friends will take place immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christian Medical Ministry of Alabama (CMMA), 2310 Briarwood Trace, Birmingham, AL 35243 (www.cmmauab.org).
