Bob Flynn, 76, of Hoover, passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2018. He was born and raised in Fairfield, AL and graduated from John Carroll High School. Bob received his undergraduate degree from Auburn University and his Master’s from Samford University. He served our country in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Marine Sergeant with the India Company 3-1 during the Vietnam War. Before Bob deployed to Vietnam, he was trained at Parris Island, SC. He also trained at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC and at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. Bob was stationed from 1967 until 1968 in Da Nang, Vietnam. He was honorably discharged due to severe injuries incurred in the war. Bob received the Marine Corps Unit Citation of two Purple Hearts, along with the National Defense Vietnam Service Medal.
Bob enjoyed his civilian career as an Accounts Auditor for the Birmingham Board of Education, in addition to working in industrial sales with Piping and Equipment Corporation. He also worked as a Benefits Authorizer for Social Security before retiring and finding his dream job as “Pops” to his treasured grandson.
Bob is preceded in death by his son, Christopher Johns Flynn; and parents, William and Mary Flynn. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Sally Johns Flynn; daughter, Jennifer Flynn Cataldo and grandson, Flynn Grady Cataldo. Also left to cherish his memory are sisters-in-law, Becky Crenshaw and Nancy Ford.
The celebration of Bob’s life will be on Monday, March 19, 2018. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, followed by an 11:00 am service at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham. Interment will be at 2:00 pm at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL.
