McDaniel Sr, Richard Love, age 84, of Vestavia Hills, Alabama passed away on March 3, 2013 peacefully in the comfort of his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Harrison and Roberta Louise Brown McDaniel, his brothers Harry and Robert, and great-granddaughter Evalyn. He was a devoted husband and loving father, survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Jean Roach McDaniel. He is also survived by his four children Richard (Laura), Phyllis (Tim), Jim (Stephanie), and Frank (Mary Carol). He was a very beloved Grandfather to 12 grandchildren, Currie, Todd, Eleanor, Kimberly, Julie, Jay, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Sara, John, Janie, and Frank, and 9 great grandchildren, Trevor, Taylor, Ty, Jimmy, Lucia, Hunter, Lorelai, Olivia, and Diane.
Richard was born, September 12, 1928 in Chattanooga, TN. He graduated from Central High School and the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga in 1951 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Richard spent his career as a machine tool distributor, first as a partner with Modern Machinery and later as the co-owner of McDaniel Machinery with his sons, which opened in 1991. He enjoyed the relationships he built through business and continued to work his entire life.
Richard was a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church and the John Wesley Sunday school class. He found much enjoyment playing golf with his friends and family at Vestavia Country Club, and served for many years on the Board of Directors, and as the club’s president in 1995. He and Betty enjoyed their memberships with the Southeastern Seniors Golf Association, and the Duffers and Stuffers golf and supper club. He loved to watch the Tennessee Volunteers play football and basketball.
Richard most enjoyed spending time with his family. Recently, when three of his great-grandchildren were visiting, he commented that “the best thing in the world is to hear them call me granddaddy.” He loved having his entire family together for Christmas and celebration. While watching his family grow, he and Betty became the perfect example of a loving and happy marriage for their family. He will be remembered for his gentle and loving nature, sense of humor, and warm smile.
