Michael Owen Vann

December 24, 1951 - July 13, 2016 Michael Owen Vann, age 64, of Hoover, AL, passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 to be with his Heavenly Father. He had battled cancer since 2014. "Mike" was predeceased by his parents, Mason Owen and Louise Vann; his sister, Patricia McCarley; brother, Kenneth Vann; and special brother-in-law, Charles McCarley. Survivors include Mike's loving wife, Susan Vann; daughter, Michelle Cintron (Dario) of Tampa, FL; sons, Stewart Vann (Kerin) of Brooklyn, NY, Robert Vann (Carter) of Greenwich, CT, and Bill Murphree (Brooke) of Hoover; brother, Steven Vann (Pat) of Alabaster, AL; grandchildren, Robin and Jody Vann of Brooklyn, and Mason Vann of Greenwich; step-granddaughter, Olivia Fagan; and special niece, Lesleigh Vann. Mike graduated from Hueytown High School (1971), the University of Montevallo (1975), and from Birmingham School of Law (1981), and is licensed to practice law in Alabama. He had a 31-year career at Birmingham Water Works, where he served as both CFO and CEO, retiring in 2006. After retirement, Mike went on to consult with utilities throughout the country. He served on many boards and associations, including the Alabama-Mississippi Section of the American Water Works Association where he served as Chairman, Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, and the Better Business Bureau of Central Alabama. Mike graduated from the Leadership Birmingham Program in 2001. He was a member of the Alabama and American Bar associations, and received the prestigious Fuller Award from the American Water Works Association in 2001. He and Susan are members of the Riverchase United Methodist Church, Hoover. Visitation will begin at 12 noon on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Riverchase United Methodist Church, Hoover, and will be followed by the 1 p.m. funeral service at the church. Burial will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham, AL. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Riverchase United Methodist Church, Hoover, AL.
