Joe Brown Knox, Jr., 76 of Alabaster (formerly of Charleston, SC and Brunswick, GA), passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Joe was born in Charleston, South Carolina and graduated from Glynn Academy in 1958. He was a football all-star and attended the Citadel on a football scholarship. After leaving the Citadel, he worked at Brunswick Pulp and Paper Mill. He joined the United States Army, serving two combat tours during the Vietnam War. He served as a combat medic, interpreter and as a chaplain’s assistant. Upon returning home, he attended Georgia Southern University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. There, he met his wife Frances. After they married, Joe attended Northeast Missouri State (now Truman State University). After he received his Master’s degree in Psychology, they moved to Marietta, Georgia where he worked at Georgia Regional Hospital in Atlanta. After working there, he worked at a variety of companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Levi Strauss and Atari. After retiring from Bellsouth he undertook many ministry efforts such as biblical counseling and English as a Second Language. He later became an Elder at Evangel Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Knox is preceded in death by his son, Kenny Knox; brother, Ray Knox; and parents, J.B. and Lois Knox. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Frances Knox; son, Joey Knox (Julie); daughters, Ashlee Knox Hartley (John Anthony) and Molly Knox Jacobs (Aaron); sister, Joyce Knox Tate; grandchildren, Shelby Hartley Brulez (Anthony), Jonah Jacobs, Manny Jacobs, Kenny Jacobs and Brayden Knox; and great granddaughter, Ivy Cole Brulez. Other loved ones left to cherish his memory include Amy East, Darren East-Pickren, Brant East, John Knox, Robert Youmans, Kirk, Lee Ann and Carrie.
The celebration of Joe’s life will be at 2pm on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Evangel Presbyterian Church in Alabaster, AL with visitation beginning at 1pm. Burial will be at 2pm on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery in Brunswick, GA.
