Janice May Moody

Mrs. Moody was born in Mobile, Alabama, on August 2, 1946. After graduating from Shades Valley High School in 1964, she soon thereafter married Joe Moody the day after her 18th birthday. After giving birth to three daughters within the first five years of marriage, Mrs. Moody then shifted her focus to a love that would be bested only by that of her family: her career.

In 1974, Mrs. Moody began working for Shelby County Schools as a library assistant. She was soon asked to be trained as a bookkeeper when the long-time bookkeeper retired. She remained at Valley Elementary until 1982, when Inverness Elementary opened its doors. As the school’s first bookkeeper, she remained working at the position until just several weeks before her passing.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Moody took part in many impactful roles. If you were to ask five people that knew her what part she played in their lives, you’d likely receive five different answers. Whether it be a mother, friend, grandmother, coworker or mentor, Mrs. Moody’s impact was felt by all those that knew her.

There is one common thread that you would likely hear from every person, though: she loved. Mrs. Moody never took on anything in her life without fully dedicating herself to it, whether that be her role as a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother or a bookkeeper. Not only was Mrs. Moody loved, but she always ensured that those that knew her understood that she loved them back.

Defining Mrs. Moody’s presence as warm would be an understatement. Her welcoming smile had a way of bringing people together while her infectious laugh could be heard from three rooms away. Whether it was her tight hugs or the mischievous twinkle that would sparkle from her eyes before she made a joke, warmth emanated from Mrs. Moody — the byproduct of her kind, loving soul.

While Mrs. Moody might have passed on from this earthly realm, she leaves behind a legacy of love.

Mrs. Moody was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Moody, who passed away in 2004. She is survived by her friend and companion, Charlie Patterson; her sister, Carole May Chapman; her three daughters and their children: Janice Moody (Barrett) Doyle, Kaytlyn (Travis) Gray, Christian (Tricia) Doyle, Corban (Abby) Doyle, Josie Kanaan (Jonathan) Horton, Colson (Madison) Doyle, Karmyn (Trevor) Pressley, Caedmon Doyle and Seth Doyle; Mary Moody (R.A. "Tony") Moore, Ashley Moore, R.A. Drake (Natasha) Moore, Devin Moore and Celeste Moore; and Christina Moody (David) Blackwell, Joseph (Emily) Blackwell and Joshua (Katharine) Blackwell; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Moody's services will be at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home at 475 Cahaba Valley Road in Pelham, Alabama. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, 2024. Her funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, June 17, 2024, followed by a private graveside service for the family.
