Herman O. Thrash Jr. passed away peacefully on June 12, 2019 surrounded by his family at his Meadow Brook home in Birmingham at the age of 85 years. He is survived by his daughter Terri Golden (John) and her children, Nicole and Zachary Lambertson also from Meadow Brook; his son Brad Thrash (Susan) and their children Stewart (Scottie), Joseph and Gracelyn Thrash from Atlanta; a sister Betty Teague from Lake Martin; and many cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Pearl Graham Thrash; and his parents Herman and Vera Thrash of Eclectic, Alabama.
He was born on September 1, 1933 in Bessemer, Alabama and moved to Eclectic, Alabama in 1938. He attended Eclectic Elementary School and graduated from Elmore County High School. His first job was with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Washington DC. He graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He started a career with Alabama Power in 1956 and retired in 1992 after taking on a range of engineering and leadership positions in the fossil, hydro, and nuclear generation departments.
He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Friendship class in Homewood since 1967. He was one of the first members of Inverness Country Club and was an avid tennis player. He was a good husband, father, son, brother, grandfather (“Pa”), and friend.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at the Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama on Monday, June 17 with visitation starting at 11 am followed by a service at 12 pm, reception and graveside ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity United Methodist Church in Homewood.
