Dorothy Nell (Featherstone) Chamberlain was born on October 9, 1925 to the union of Mary Ann (McKinley) and Gordon Atchison Featherstone in Dallas, Texas. She passed away peacefully on December 4, 2023 at the age of 98.
Dorothy began her formal education in the Dallas County public schools and graduated from Sunset High School in 1942. She furthered her education at Hardin-Simmons University (BA, 1948) in Abilene, TX, and Middle Tennessee State University (MEd, 1976) in Murfreesboro, TN. She was united in holy matrimony with H. Eugene Chamberlain on June 25, 1949 in Dallas, TX. They were blessed with two children, Barry and Marigene. After their marriage, the couple lived ten years in Texas and for fifty years in Nashville, TN. Dorothy was a longtime member of Nashville First Baptist Church before moving to Birmingham in 2012 following the death of Eugene. She was a teacher at Andrew Jackson Elementary School in Old Hickory, TN for over twenty years where she taught first and third grades. She devoted her life to the education and nurture of children. After she moved to Birmingham, she became an affiliate member of Bluff Park United Methodist Church, Bluff Park, AL. Dorothy was a generous soul, offering hospitality and friendship to a wide community of friends and acquaintances throughout her life. She took great pleasure in meeting people. Her family and friends will always remember her big smile and joy at seeing them whenever they crossed paths.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Gordon A. and Mary Ann (McKinley) Featherstone, her husband H. Eugene Chamberlain, and her sister Virginia Myers. She is survived by her son Barry (Mona) of Cypress, TX; daughter Marigene of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren, Daniel (Jimonica) of Spring, TX, Neal (Marcyia) of Jacksonville, NC, and Renee (Beth) of Beaverton, OR; great grandchildren, Carter Singleton, Ana Singleton, and Elias Chamberlain of Jacksonville, NC; nephew Steve Myers (Barbara) and great nephews, Austin, Jared (Haley) and Colin, all of West Tawakoni, TX.
We recognize Dorothy’s team of caregivers and her friends at the Galleria Woods Senior Living Community who have become a part of Dorothy’s extended family.
The burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, TN December 13, 2023 in a private ceremony. Family and friends will join for A Celebration of Life service on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 1:30 pm at Bluff Park United Methodist Church, Bluff Park, AL.
Following the service, there will be a reception at Galleria Woods Senior Living Community in Hoover, AL from 3-4 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to the Nashville First Baptist Church or Bluff Park United Methodist Church children’s ministries.
