Daniel Stephen Martin of Helena, Alabama was born on August 22, 1937 to Mary Fedkovich Martin and Theodore Frank Martin of Wyandotte, Michigan. Dan passed away peacefully on December 22, 2022 at the age of 85.
He was a graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School and Michigan State University where he earned a degree in Journalism. He enlisted in the United States Army Reserves in June of 1960 and was honorably discharged after serving six years.
In July of 1961, Dan began his career with The Procter and Gamble Company as a Sales and Advertising Representative in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was on one of his business trips to Birmingham, Alabama that he met the love of his life, Lila Elaine Appling of Birmingham, Alabama. They were joyfully wed on February 8, 1964 at St. Paul's Cathedral. They lived in Cincinnati, Ohio for several years where they had three children. The family moved to Birmingham where he was employed with Alabama Power Company until retirement.
Dan had a quick, dry-witted sense of humor that endeared him to everyone he met. He made others feel naturally at ease as though they were a lifelong friend, and he would do whatever he could to help a family, friend or neighbor in need. He especially enjoyed the company of others and good conversation. He loved traveling to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, playing golf, watching horse races, reading mystery or history novels, and solving crossword puzzles. Dan thoroughly and profoundly loved his family and was exceptionally proud of them. He attended numerous school and sporting events, specifically tennis, soccer and baseball, for his children and grandchildren.
Anyone who personally knew Dan knew that he was the most loving husband, father and “Poppy” a family could ask for. Dan is survived by his beloved wife of over 58 years, Elaine, his children, Andrea Newman (departed spouse, Larry), Stephanie Harless (Lance), Craig Martin, granddaughters, Tatum Harless (Landin Henderson), Amber Harless Prater (Sam), and grandson, Connor Martin. He is also survived by his sister, Lydia Gallow (Dennis); extended family; and close friends. We are indescribably thankful for his love and devotion.
Services will be held at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama on Saturday, February 4, 2023. A visitation will be at 10 a.m., followed by A Remembrance and Celebration of Life at 11 a.m. at the chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Alabama, https://www.rmhca.org/, or the charity of your choice.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.SouthernHeritageFunerals.com for the Martin family.
