She graduated from St. Paul Catholic High School in 1946 and married her high school sweetheart, Floyd Eugene Rohling, Sr., on June 7, 1947. They were married 44 and one-half years until his death on January 13, 1992.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Eugene Rohling, Sr.; her parents, Walter James Woods, Sr. and Frances Naro Woods; her brother, Walter James Woods, Jr.; and her sisters, Sarah Woods Naugher and Rose Woods Gilmore.
Bernice is survived by her son, Floyd Eugene Rohling, Jr. (Mary Margaret); her daughters, Regina Rohling Sandlin and Carol Rohling; her grandchildren, Carol Lange, Allen Sandlin, Jr. (Mae Beth), Frank Rohling, Carly Rohling, and Cayla Rohling; great-grandchildren, Drew Lange, Cate Lange, and Melody Rohling; and four generations of nieces and nephews.
Bernice's life was filled with happiness and joy, doing for and with her children and grandchildren: Attending Little League Baseball games for her son and being a Den Mother for his Cub Scouts, and attending her daughters' volleyball games and dance lessons, and making all of their costumes for recitals. She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bernice and her husband chaperoned the Youth Group at St. Barnabas and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic churches for nine years. In 2001, she moved to Shelby County and joined St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church and remained a member until her death.
The family would like to give special recognition to Pam Littleton, Diane Stith, and staff members at Meadowview Nursing Center and Aveanna Hospice.
Bernice's family will greet friends on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Birmingham, Alabama from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon at the church's chapel, 7340 Cahaba Valley Road, Birmingham, AL 35242. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Birmingham.
Officiating will be Monsignor Paul Rohling and Father Joe Culotta, and pallbearers will be Allen Sandlin, Frank Rohling, Drew Lange, Michael Gilmore, Ben Franklin, and Traye Hulsey.
