Born August 29, 1951 in Peoria to Clarence Johnson and Doris Lorraine (Stetler) Smith, he married Cathy Purdy on July 10, 1971 in Creve Coeur.
Surviving are one son, Josh Smith of East Peoria; two daughters, Steevy (Jared) Garrett of Bartonville and Jenifer (Nathan) Copeland of Marquette Heights; nine grandchildren, Joshlyn (Alex) Gliddon stationed in Kuwait, Justus King of Modesto, California, Hannah Smith and Savannah Smith, both of Modesto, California, Payton Garrett, Grayson Garrett, and Reese Garrett, all of Bartonville, and Ellie Copeland and Hazel Copeland, both of Marquette Heights; one great-granddaughter, Addyson Imholte of Minnesota, and four siblings, Diana Jacobs of Las Vegas, Nevada, David (Lisa) Smith of Creve Coeur, Rodney (Marla) Smith of South Pekin, and Tammy (Troy) Wilson of Forest City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three children, Amy Smith, Sara Smith, and Shawn Smith; one sister, Christine Smith; one brother-in-law, Sonny Jacobs and his beloved dog, Sadie.
Steve made his career as a union painter.
He was a devout follower of God and a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church in rural Manito. Steve loved his kids and grandkids and also liked to fish.
He was deeply proud of his time serving in the United States Marine Corps and of other family members who served in the military.
His visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, March 25, 2024 at Good Shepherd Baptist Church in rural Manito. A memorial service will follow at noon. Pastor John Worsham will officiate. Inurnment will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at Springdale Cemetery in Peoria where military rites will be accorded by the United States Marine Corps and Tazewell Military Rites Team.
