Born January 30, 1951 in Pekin to Lloyd and Lula (Hobbs) Skaggs, he married Alice Powell on October 4, 1974 in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Stacy (Mark Wolfe) Skaggs of Pekin, Jenny (Kevin) Bloem of Michigan, Penny (Mathew) Hays of Florida and Melissa (Mike) Strickler of Pekin; four grandchildren, John Strickler, Cohen and Brantley Bloem and William Hays; one brother, Stan Skaggs and two sisters, Katherine (Dave) Wilcox and Debbie (Daryl) Birkey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings, Jim and Ralph Skaggs, Gloria Spracklen, Viola Zimmerman, Ronnie Mount and Russell Skaggs.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army.
He was an ironworker for 40 years, retiring from the Ironworkers Union local 112 in 2015.
John was known and loved for his dedication to his family and his strong work ethic. He found pride and joy at his home and property in South Pekin, Illinois.
His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Reverend Judy Doyle will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, September 30, also at the funeral home. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery in San Jose.
Military rites will be provided by the United States Army and Tazewell Military Rites Team.
