Mary Jane was born in Augusta, GA on July 2, 1941 to Harvie and Mary Andrews Harveston. She grew up in Augusta and loved watching the Masters Golf Tournament with her family. In 1959, she left Georgia to attend Baylor University in Waco, TX where she graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor’s Degree. She was married to James E. Hendrickson for 6 years, during which time their daughter Paige was born. For the remainder of her life, she lived in Dallas, TX, Honolulu, HI, Houston, TX, and then Pearland, TX.
Mary Jane worked as an English Teacher, then as a Legal Secretary, first for Atty Thomas N. Griffith in Duncanville, TX and last for Atty Christopher Dean in Houston, TX. Her hobbies included making Casserole Caddies, baking muffins for birthdays, and playing piano for Paige’s Trumpet competitions. She also attended every event for 5 grandkids, supporting them and cheering them on with much love.
As a member of First Baptist Church, in Dallas for 12 years, and in Houston for 32 years, she was very active in her Sunday School class. She played the piano for her class, and at the Sunday Service at The Forum Senior Living Center. Mary Jane was known to bring flowers and small gifts to the seniors on holidays and special occasions to brighten their day.
Mary Jane was an avid sports fan, loving her Dallas Cowboys and Houston Astros. She would write down all of the football scores for the weekend, so she could pass them along to her friends for their Fantasy Football record keeping. With her Astros visor on, she would sit at the TV and eat popcorn while cheering them on to victory. She proudly hosted a number of Super Bowl parties in her beautifully-kept home for the sweet church friends who gave her so much joy.
Mary Jane is survived by her daughter, Paige Kovar; her grandchildren, Zachary, Azalea, and Jovanni Kovar; and her “Grandma J” family, Chris, Holley, and their daughters Abbey and Libbey Dean.
Paige wishes to thank her friends, and everyone at First Baptist Church for their love and support of Mary Jane and their little family. A special thanks to Carolyn Barr, Felicia Batts, and Holley Dean for their outreach and encouragement in recent weeks. May God grant us all peace.
