Bruce Thornton was born to Carrie and Devoy Thornton in Mart, Texas on December 1, 1950. His early years were heavily influenced by his grandfather, Henry Sharp, and his grandmother, Beulah Sharp, who instilled a love of God and family in him and his siblings. Bruce loved to sing and was a member of the choir at St. Mary's Baptist Church in Mart, Texas.
Bruce attended Anderson High School and Mart High School, where he was particularly successful on the football field and was the first African-American quarterback. He was also a member of the National Honor Society. Bruce never lost his bond with his Anderson classmates, as they always had a special place in his heart. Bruce then attended the University of North Texas, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology.
Bruce's life was a testament to his family. He married his college sweetheart, Diana Davis, and together, they shared over 48 years of unwavering love and devotion; raising their boys, Brian and Patrick. Fatherhood wa the center of Bruce's life, and his ome was a sanctuary of warmth and laughter, where family gatherings were treasured moments filled with joy.
He discovered his professional calling in healthcare as a registered respiratory therapist, driven by his love for people and commitment to service. his tenure as President of the Texas Society of Respiratory Care showcased his compassionate care and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on both Patients and colleagues alike.
Bruce found joy in simple pleasures beyond his professional life, such as playing dominoes and cards with friends and family. his humor and quick wit often shone through, like when he jokingly quipped "Your dignity is calling," while defeating you in a card or domino game.
He loved sitting with his family at the "lying table" in Mart, creating fond memories of joy and camaraderie. He also loved his in-laws, the Davis family, whom he affectionately referred to as his "outlaws". He especially enjoyed Davis family events, where he was lovingly known as "Uncle Bruce."
Bruce was a beloved brother and everyone's favorite uncle, bringing wisdom, laughter, and love to every gathering. His three grandchildren, Caleb, Kiryn, and Caden, whom he nicknamed "The Witnesses," held a special place in his heart, and he cherished the time spent watching them grow and thrive.
On July 2, 2024 Bruce transitioned to be with our Heavenly Father at the age of 73. He is preceded in death by his Mother, Carrie Thornton; Father , Devoy Thornton; Sister, Sandra Brabham; Niece, Courtney Corsey; Cousin-Brother, Jerry Sharp; and his beloved Uncles- Lawrence Thornton,"Uncle Man", and Summie Sharp, Sr.
Bruce leaves behind to cherish his memory and continue his legacy, his loving wife Diana; (2) Children: Brian Thornton (Maya) and Patrick Thornton, (3) Grandchildren: Caleb Thornton, Kiryn Thornton, and Caden Thornton, "The Witnesses"; (2) Brothers: Louis Thornton (Lydia) of Fort Worth, Texas, and Theron Tatum of Los Angeles, California; (1) Sister: Barbara Gayle Brown of Mart, Texas; (2) Cousin-Brothers: Rodger Sharp of Dallas, Texas, and Joe Long of Waco, Texas.
And a host of other relatives, extended family, colleagues, classmates, and a community of friends whose lives he touched deeply.
Bruce's spirit lives an his the hearts of all who knew him.
