She was born July 4, 1948, in Rome, Mississippi, a daughter of the late Otis Dean Higginbotham and Eunice Beatrice Kiger Higginbotham. Her birthday of the Fourth of July was most fitting as Martha had an independent temperament from an early age.
Martha’s life was one of Christian dedication and service to others. A fervent prayer warrior, Martha truly lived the motto, “Let go and let God.” Always ready to help, her servant’s heart led her to volunteer work at the hospital as well as personal aid to family and friends. Those who knew Martha also knew that one phone call to her would bring assistance in any form they may be in need of. Whether performing a task for another or simply lifting up prayerful petitions on their behalf, Martha’s desire to encourage and support those around her was a constant throughout her entire life.
Martha’s favorite moments were spent with her family. Cooking for her grandsons brought her great joy and family meals were special to her. In her free time Martha also enjoyed shopping.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Arlis Grice; and sisters, Marilyn Cotton, and Patricia Berry.
Survivors include daughter, Donna Lynn Whitley and husband Robbie; son, Steven Grice and wife Michelle; daughter, Melissa Martin and husband Kenny; daughter, Teresa Luke and husband Nyle; grandchildren, Cody Grice, Hunter Grice, Kenny Martin, Jr., Jeffrey Bounds, and Jordan VanBuren; sisters, Carol Boyte, Sue Barnette and husband Roy; and Wanda Rowe; and fiancée, Richard Thornton.
