Cliff retired in 1984 as a flight engineer with the 172nd Mississippi Air National Guard. He had 42 years of military service, flying as an aerial engineer in WWII, and a flight engineer in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, logging over 10,000 hours of flying time.
Cliff started his military career at age 18 when he joined the Army Air Corp. After training, he was an aerial engineer on a C-47 and P.B.Y., flying in Europe during WWII. He said it was quite an experience to leave the farm in Humphreys County and get to see all the major cities of Europe.
When he returned home, he married Dorothy Brown. He farmed for one year then worked for Delta Implement in Yazoo City for 20 years. After the war, he joined the Air Force Reserve, then transferred to the Mississippi Air National Guard. In 1967 Cliff started working full-time as an aircraft engine mechanic, then a flight engineer on the C-124’s and C-130’s.
Cliff always loved flying. He had three small airplanes and taught several of the children to fly. He also built and flew radio controlled model planes. He learned to play guitar and mandolin as a boy, then took piano lessons at age 52. Cliff was also a very talented woodworker. Even at the age of 90, he played dominos and bowled each week.
Cliff was a long-time member of Eastside Baptist Church. He served the Lord in many ways by always supporting his church, serving on committees and doing any task he was given. He and Dorothy set an example of what a Christian marriage and home should be.
Cliff is survived by his children, James and Linda Cobb of Canton, Carol Smith of Magee, Marie and Bill Woodrick of Vicksburg, David and Trina Cobb of Clinton and Sharon Brim of Pearl; sister, Lou Erickson Allen; 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Brown Cobb; parents, Clifford and Mabel Jones Cobb; brothers, Carl and Edwin Cobb; sister, Clara Temple; grandchildren, Amanda Woodrick, Hunter Cobb and Cathy Abernathy; great-granddaughter, Sarah Alice Adams; and sons-in-law, Bill Smith and Pete Brim.
