Robert Leonard McElroy, passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at the age of 56, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was born and raised in Atlanta. Bobby was a true southern man. He was quick to spin a story, tell a joke, or share his opinion, he was a funny man that had heart of gold-even though that heart sometimes lived in a thick skin made up of a strong opinion that, once set, was unlikely to budge.
Everyone that knew Bobby has been graced with a colorful story, told in a winding and meandering way that would take you down a path of his imagination and be peppered with history, humor and a razor-sharp wit. Bobby lived a colorful life and was a man who set about his days strictly on his own terms. This is a characteristic that he had since childhood, seeing the world through his twinkling blue eyes and living according to what he believed.
Bobby was a lifelong student of history, reading history textbooks for pleasure and had a particular interest in the America Civil War. It was rare to stump him with a question about the topic, his knowledge extensive and a product of a lifetime of reading. A man of simple tastes, but many interest, you could talk to Bobby and hear of his plans to visit an historical site, go hunting, fishing, camping, boating, or setting out to hunt relics. We all knew if you found something on the ground out in the country that Bobby could identify it. Also, if he watched Jeopardy, he always knew the answers and was a tremendous source of random facts, knowledge, and obscure information.
Bobby leaves behind many family members and friends, loved ones, and acquaintances who somehow know that the world lost a little sparkle when Bobby passed away. A lifelong animal lover he leaves behind one of the many rescue pets that he lovingly cared for and spoiled. We offer thanks to those who loved him and cared for him along the way, sharing with him the pieces of himself that he showed the world. Those of us who really knew him know that he was a sweet, funny, kind man.
Preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents: and his son; as well as a handful of lifelong friends. Those of us he left behind pray that Bobby will rest in peace, in comfort, and surrounded by love. We are lucky to have shared his light and will forever be blessed by his memory.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to one of the following causes: The American Heart Association, The National Trust for Historic Preservation, The American Humane Society, or your local no-kill Animal Shelter.
Rest in Peace Bobby. You did it all your way!
