Don grew up on the east side of Columbus on Stelzer Road near the airport and attended East High School. He married Mildred (Rhodeback) Stelzer on August 19, 1943 with whom he had an amazing 68-year marriage until her death in 2011.
Don proudly served in World War II in the European theater as an Army Technical Sergeant in the 415th Ordnance Evacuation Company. After the war, Don held positions at the Pataskala Machine Shop, North American Aviation and Lucent Technology. Don enjoyed traveling extensively around the United States with his family, was an avid hunter and lifetime member of the NRA. Throughout his life he could always be found tinkering or repairing anything he could get his hands on.
Don served as a board member of the Pataskala Cemetery for 69 years and was an honorable veteran, loving husband, father and friend. Always a great story teller, he was truly a selfless individual and always put the needs of others first. He had a generous heart and a wonderful sense of humor.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred Rhodeback Stelzer and brother, Jerry Stelzer. He is survived by his brother, William (Ruth) Stelzer; brother, James (Liz) Stelzer; brother-in-law, Edwin (Sharon) Rhodeback; sister-in-law, Nanette (Pete) Pendergast; daughter, Sherry D. Engle; son, Monte (Pam) Stelzer; grandchildren, John, Brian, Steven, Nathan and Angela; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Friends and family may call between 2pm and 4pm on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Kauber-Fraley Funeral Home at 289 S. Main St. Pataskala, Ohio 43062. Service will be held on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 1:30pm with Pastor Calvin Alexander officiating. Interment to follow at the Pataskala Cemetery.
