Robert Edward Luna

Robert Edward Luna was born in Houston, Texas, on January 13, 1962, to Geneva and Roberto Luna. Bob, as he was known to his friends and family, attended Seton Junior High School and St. Pius X High School where he excelled in sports. Bob helped his high school’s football team win the state championship in 1976, 1977 and 1978. The St. Pius baseball team also won state championships in 1978 and 1979 with Bob at first base.

After graduating high school in 1980, Bob attended Sam Houston State University. It was here he joined the Social Society of Independents fraternity and made many life-long friends. Bob graduated from SHSU in 1986 with a Bachelor’s degree in Radio, Television, and Film. He would spend his entire career as a sports video journalist as a result.

Bob’s first job, after graduation, was in Bryan-College Station. He worked news and sports for the local CBS television affiliate KTBX-3, until 1989. That is when he made the move to San Antonio where he was employed by another CBS station, KENS-5. Bob enjoyed a long career with KENS and, as he did wherever he went, Bob forged many enduring friendships at the station as well as in the community. It was through KENS that Bob began covering national events, including Super Bowls, and even traveled the world experiencing venues that included the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. But Bob left KENS in 1997 to help establish a San Antonio-based production company that also specialized in sports. After a brief illness, Bob decided to branch out on his own, and created Bob Luna Productions (BLunaPro). True to his calling, Bob based this new company on hunting and fishing expeditions far and wide, where he shot and edited shows for television, once again meeting and befriending a wide range of fishing and hunting experts.

In 2005, Bob moved back to his hometown of Houston where he joined the CBS team at KHOU-11. He spent the rest of his days doing as he always had, providing excellent photojournalism skills, making good friends, and traveling. The move to Houston allowed him to reconnect with his family as his health began to fail. Bob retired from KHOU in 2019.

Bob is survived by his mother Geneva Luna, girlfriend Carol Thomson Tribble, sister Dalia M. Chapa (Santiago), brother Rick D. Luna (Stephanie), and Raymond J. Luna (Janet). He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Roberto G. Luna as well as by numerous aunts and uncles, most notably his Aunt Lupe (Rodriguez).
