Dr. Robert Leroy Hershberger , 91, of Houston, went to be with his Lord Thursday, March 1, 2012, after a brief illness. He was born June 20, 1920 in La Porte, Texas to A.L. Hershberger and Daisy May Hovey Hershberger. Valedictorian of his class, he graduated in 1937 from La Porte High School, and then earned a Bachelor’s degree in music from Sam Houston State University in 1941. He was band director at Sour Lake High School. He voluntarily entered the United States Navy in 1941 and distinguished himself as a Naval Officer, flying B-24s in many campaigns in the Pacific. He was a decorated veteran. Included among his awards is the Distinguished Flying Cross. After an honorable discharge from the navy in 1946, he entered Duke Medical School, graduating in 1951. He practiced internal medicine from 1954 to 2000, in the Houston area and served several generations of families. He was on the faculty at Baylor Medical School and was on the medical staff at Methodist Hospital for many years. He is survived by his sister Joy Richard. He was the beloved uncle to Ty Ann Noyes, Tyrone Richard, Mark Richard and Lanny Hershberger. He also leaves behind many great and great-great nieces and nephews whom he loved. He will be missed by the many to whom he showed great kindnesses and generosity of friendship. He loved the Lord and lived a life worthy of the words “Well done, my good and faithful servant…Come and share your master’s happiness (Matthew 25:21)… and dwell in the House of the Lord forever.(Psalm 23:6) The family extends their appreciation to the wonderful care givers with Temporary Home Care for their loving care and devoted support. In lieu of usual remembrances, please make donations to a charity of choice. Visitation will be Monday, March 5, 2012 from 6PM to 8PM at Grand View Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at 12:30PM at Grand View Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Grand View Memorial Park.
