Debbie Houston, 70, of Deer Park, Texas, passed peacefully into heaven and met her Savior after a strong and courageous battle with cancer, October 10, 2024. She was born in Pasadena, Texas on March 7, 1954 to Billy and Mary Ayers. She is proceeded in death by the love of her life, Dennis. They were married for 51 years and nine months.
Debbie and Dennis had a special kind of love that started at the tender ages of 14 and 15. They were married on April 7, 1972. They each asked Jesus to be their Savior at Thomas Avenue Baptist Church in 1975.
She was a member of Central Baptist Church and served in many ministries including junior high and college and career Sunday school teacher, children’s choir helper and a devoted Trustee wife.
Debbie joined the Alpha Chi Lambda sorority in 1990. She served as President in 1993-1994. She served alongside her sisters as Social and Service Committee Coordinator. There they assisted families in need at Christmas, collected nonperishable items for the Deer Park Food Pantry, and gave support to local women’s shelters. Debbie also planned several memorable outings with the HummerBird Celebration in Rockport being her favorite. She had the distinct honor of being selected as Alpha Chi Lambda’s Woman of the Year in 1991 and again in 2006. Through Debbie’s love for the church many accepted her invitation and would find Central as their church home as well.
For work Debbie always found herself fulfilled in serving others. In her early twenties there was no surprise she enjoyed serving customers at Casa Olé. She worked for many years in Member Services at Rohm and Hass Credit Union. Debbie truly cared for each member and their families. She loved her time as an employee at Odfjell Terminals as the receptionist. She would come home and share stories of her co-worker’s victories and struggles, always asking for prayer on their behalf. Her beautiful smile and friendly voice encouraged everyone around her.
If you knew Debbie, you knew how much she loved her family! The girls were the apple of her eye and nothing gave her greater joy than being their mom. She beamed with pride when sharing stories and pictures of her grandchildren.
Debbie will always be remembered as the sweetest person in the room and how she made each person feel important and loved!
