Charles R Wood (Bob) left this world just after sunrise on Friday August 30th, 2024, at the age of 75 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born September 16, 1948, to Charles Hampton Wood and Frances Emma Krause. After losing his parents at a young age, he had many battles to overcome until he met the love of his life Kay Hammack, whom he was married to for almost 54 years.
Words used to describe Bob are Godly, faithful, loving, generous, forgiving, honest, helpful, patient and kind. The family would joke that he couldn’t carry too much money in his wallet because he would give it all away. He loved the Lord and wanted to share his faith with anyone who would listen.
Bob enjoyed spending time with his wife, traveling, and seeing natural wonders. With his trusty binoculars around his neck, he hiked many trails through the state and national parks. Camping and fishing were some of his favorite hobbies, especially when he could share them with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed following the Houston Cougars sports teams, but his bigger passion was attending his grandchildren’s events such as plays, games, and recitals.
Bob had many careers and jobs throughout his life. He worked at Champion Paper Mill (of numerous names) from 1969-2006 and Pasadena ISD as an instructional aide from 2007-2010. He volunteered as a Harris County Ombudsman, then became a full time Ombudsman for Houston-Galveston (2010-2023), training many new volunteers in his tenure. This was his true calling which used his lifetime accrued skills and his personality most effectively- he loved this job and his colleagues greatly. Bob was also on the board of Interfaith Manor in Pasadena and was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus. He had many experiences and is said to have had 16 W2’s in one year when he was young.
Bob is preceded in death by his father Charles Hampton Wood and his mother Frances Emma Krause. He is survived by his loving wife Kay Wood, children Robby and Lisa Wood, Michael and Samantha Wood, Karen Wood, and Deborah and Henry Charanza. His beloved grandchildren Noah and Charlee Wood, Cash Wood, and Jackson, Austin and Gracie Charanza. He is also survived by his siblings, Bill Wood and wife Cheryl, Buddy Wood and wife Debbie, Sharon Hilliard and husband James, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Bob loved God, his family, was a generous giving man that made friends everywhere he went and helped anyone he could.
The family will be forever grateful for the love and support given to them over the past year.
May the Lord bless us, protect us, and keep us from harm.
