Margaret “Nell” Thomson was born on Christmas day 1928 in Sanquhar, Scotland and was the only child of Alexander and Sarah McDowall. Before immigrating to Canada in 1969, she worked as a secretary, bookkeeper and hairdresser which led to her owning two salons. She married her husband, Ian Thomson, in 1979 in Ottawa, Ontario where they lived and worked until moving to Vancouver Island over 15 years ago. Sadly, she lost her husband not long after in 2005. Nell died at age 89 at Nanaimo hospital on July 24, 2018 from a stroke and other complications following a fall.
Nell enjoyed travelling, lawn bowling, rug hooking, and spending time at the senior centre. She was bighearted when it came to the charities that she donated to every year. Please consider donating in her memory to one of the five charities she included in her very generous final bequests: Salvation Army of Canada, Nanaimo Hospital Foundation, The Arthritis Society, BC SPCA and the Canadian Cancer Society. Nell was a bonnie lass who will be sorely missed, especially by her cat Mysti who now lives with her friends and neighbours Don and Pam Cochrane. There will be a tea in her memory on August 25, 2018 at 2 pm at the Parksville Seniors’ Drop-In Centre.
