Brent was born (March 16th, 1955) in Edmonton, Alberta to proud parents Dr. James Harvey Hook (Jim) and Lorraine Gertrude Hook (Gert) while Jim attended medical school. They soon moved to Saskatoon, Sask as Jim began his practise. In 1967 the family moved to Medicine Hat where Brent spent most of his youth and early adulthood. He attended Crescent Heights High School, after which he moved to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta. In 1978 he transitioned into the hospitality industry. He met his life partner and best friend Judy while working at the Edmonton Plaza Hotel and quickly fell in love. Brent and Judy soon moved to Parksville, Vancouver Island to take over the Dairy Queen in 1982. They began their family in 1985 with Courtney, Whitney (‘87), and Taylor (‘88). Brent cherished his children every day of his life. After the Love of his Family, his job was next. Brent spent over 37 years
owning and operating the Dairy Queen and other businesses in the Parksville area.
He gave his heart and soul to his community, offering many people their first jobs, helping develop local events like the Sandcastle days, sponsoring countless sports teams, and overall helping to build the community he enjoyed living in. A dedicated member of Rotary and Kinsmen. Hosted several international students. This lifelong dedication culminated in being the recipient of the “Citizen of the Year” award in 2006. Outside of work Brent was an avid skier, golfer, and swimmer, he played slow pitch and wallyball.
Brent lived by the motto “C’est la vie” embracing life’s challenges and joys with remarkable resilience and good humor. Those who knew him well, knew just how remarkable, resilient and full of life he truly was.
Brent is survived by his best friend Judy, daughters Courtney and Whitney, son Taylor, grandsons Dayton and Trey, and his sisters Brenda and Jeri of Calgary.
