Debra Jean “Debbie” Matthews, 69, of Frisco, former resident of Paris, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2024, along with her beloved dog Ruby following an automobile accident in Fannin County.
Services are scheduled for 2:00 PM on Monday, May 13, 2024, at Bright-Holland Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Norris officiating. The burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Debbie, the daughter of Evelyn White Matthews and Oscar Eugene “Gene” Matthews, was born on March 12, 1955, in Paris, TX. She graduated from Roxton High School in 1973, Paris Junior College in 1975, and finally Texas Women’s University in 1977, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in history and physical education. Her 22-year teaching and coaching career positively impacted students in the Argyle, Lake Dallas, and Grapevine-Colleyville school districts. During her retirement, she continued her service to public education as a substitute teacher and volleyball officiant. Debbie was a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association, a reserve law enforcement officer, and an associate member of Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. She was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed traveling with family and friends. In fact, Debbie was to leave on May 9 for Greece.
Debbie is preceded in death by Gene, her father. Survivors include Evelyn Matthews, her mother; brothers: Larry and wife Gail, Jerry and wife Ginger; nieces and nephews: Jeremiah Matthews (Monica), Kimberly Spencer (Jay), Hunter Matthews, Remington Matthews (Alisha), and Catlyn Cizek (Mike); special cousin: Anita Jo Daniels (J.D.); numerous great nieces and nephews; and a plethora of friends from all walks of life.
