He was a long-time resident of Brooklyn, NY; New Port Richey, FL; Pocono Lakes, PA and Wilmington, DE. Peter Matra was born on August 8, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY, to parents, Albert and Carmela “Molly” Matra. Pete went on to establish a career as a truck driver, working for St. Johnsbury Trucking for many years.
Mr. Matra served in the United States Marine Corps from December 2, 1958, to February 15, 1962, earning a medal for good conduct.
Pete was an avid reader, a freelance painter, and a lover of music. He enjoyed playing and teaching guitar. He enjoyed entertaining friends and family with his magic tricks. He also enjoyed traveling and was a big lover of nature. He frequently fished and hunted at his summer home in the Poconos. He spent his later years creating a bird sanctuary in his backyard, where he spent a lot of his time. More than anything, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Carmela “Molly” Matra, his sisters Margaret Matra, Josephine DeBlase (Matra), and Alberta Melito (Matra) and his wife of 43 years, Joan Matra (Valvo).
Pete is survived by his loving companion of 20+ years, Barbara Hayward, and his children: daughter, Deborah Matra-Grossman and her husband, Steven Grossman of East Brunswick, NJ; son, Peter Matra Jr. and his wife, Margarita Matra (Alvarado) of Selden, NY; and son, Glenn Matra and wife, Keri Matra (Crespi) of Glen Mills, PA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Lindsay Liguori (Grossman) and husband Christopher Liguori, Olivia Grossman, Spencer Grossman, Peter Matra, Carly Matra, Paul Matra and Sydney Matra.
A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at 11:30am at Alleva Funeral Home, 1724 E. Lancaster Avenue, Paoli PA 19301. Luncheon to follow at Alleva Funeral Home upper level.
