Euna May Thames affectionately known as "Ms. May" was born in Grateful Hill, St. Catherine in Jamaica on May 1, 1929 to Mildred Howell- Hall and Harry Neita. She was raised by her grandmother, Antoinette "Nennen" Howell and her godmother Miss Ann White.
She attended Grateful Hill Methodist Church and Grateful Hill Primary Elementary School. She was a beautiful girl, beloved by everyone in the district. She later attended Kingston Technical School and soon caught the eye of Headley (Lion) Thames, a prominent business man in the town. They married and the union produced four girls: Claudette (deceased), Karlene, Lana and Charmaine.
Ms. May was not given to sitting home. Her husband taught her to drive trucks and soon she was helping him to transport milk, bananas and sugar cane through the steep and winding roads, all over the country. She was anomaly as a little female driving huge Ford trucks. Her warm and friendly nature made her beloved everywhere she went.
A trailblazer and a maverick, Ms. May overcame obstacles and excelled but never forgetting the needy. In Jamaica, she took the children in the District on Sunday rides to Hope Gardens and Up Park Camp. All the kids looked forward to this treat. If someone needed some job, food or clothes, she was there to lend a hand. She never visited family without bringing a gift.
She studied cosmetology and as an accomplished hairdresser, she beautified hair for young ladies and many wedding parties. When the Glenoffe Mailman retired, Ms. May purchased a mail van and pursued the mail carrier's job. This job lasted until she left Jamaica for New York City.
After Ms. May settled in New York, she sponsored her girls to the United States and got them started in the schooling and careers. She also obtained a CNA certificate, taking care of the Aged at St. Patrick's Nursing Home in the Bronx where she worked until she retired and moved to Florida.
She was a quiet spirit. Her favorite quote from her culture "When you hand ina Lion mouth, tek time draw it out".
Ms. May attended Palm Bay United Methodist Church and visited various other churches as she loved to worship with her friends. Ms. May who entered eternal life on December 2, 2016, leaves to treasure her memory: daughters, Karlene, Lana (Gresford) and Charmaine, Sister Beryl, Brother Leon, 12 Grandchildren, 22 Great Grandchildren, 2 Great Great Grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and a host of family and friends.
