Frank Rivera passed away peacefully Tuesday October 17th 2017 surrounded by his family. Frank resided in Carmel Valley, a place he always referred to as “the center of the universe”. He was retired from the United States Postal Service where he worked as a letter carrier and supervisor for 35 years. A proud Navy veteran, Frank served on the USS Proteus during the Vietnam War.
A graduate of the Monterey Peninsula College music program, Frank was fluent in many instruments, but especially excelled in the clarinet which afforded him many accolades. Frank’s study of music continued throughout his life, providing him with an extensive, eclectic music collection. His appreciation for classical, opera, and jazz lead him to many symphonies, operas, and years of devoted work at The Monterey Jazz Festival.
A gifted writer, Frank often contributed to The Monterey Herald’s opinion column. He was extremely well read and was known to all for his intellect and wit.
Frank was an avid bocce player and was a member of the United States Bocce Federation. He traveled all over the country playing bocce and making friends with those who shared his passion for the sport. His home league was at Campo Di Bocce in Los Gatos, where you could find him every Tuesday playing bocce and slurping up cioppino between frames. His love of the game granted him the position of editor, photographer, and publisher of the USBF newsletter for the past five years.
Frank was a world traveler who explored many countries including Peru, Russia, Cuba, Turkey, Greece, Argentina and the land of his ancestors, Sicily. As an amateur astronomer he loved to explore the night sky and ponder the wonders of the universe, often quoting Carl Sagan and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Though humble about his work, Frank was a gifted sketch artist and painter.
Frank enjoyed working in his yard, home improvement projects, tending his bee hives, and cheering on his beloved 49ers. He liked to spend his evenings watching Jeopardy and sitting on his patio sipping amaretto accompanied by his wife and their three dogs
Frank is survived by his wife, Cynthia; son, Frank Rivera (Brandy); daughter, Angie (Tom) Dallaire; step-daughter, Ardelle (Fred) Lind; step-son, Jay (Kathy) Banta; nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
