Suzanne “Sue” Schmitz Giannos, lifelong resident of Kansas City and Prairie Village, passed away in Salina, Kansas on July 9, 2023, of Alzheimer’s disease. Sue was born in Kansas City, Missouri on February 23, 1933. She graduated from Southwest High School in 1949 and Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin with a BA in Psychology and Education in 1953. While at Beloit, Sue was in the Delta Gamma Sorority and dated, and married Bill Giannos in June 1954. Sue worked as an elementary and preschool teacher in California, Georgia, and Missouri and then settled in Prairie Village, Kansas raising her two children: Steve and Cathy Sue. Sue worked as an office administrator at the Johnson County Preschool for 7 years. In the following years she was an office administrator for Christ Episcopal Church, Leawood Baptist Church, Faith Lutheran Church, and Country Club Christian Church.
She will always be remembered for her intelligence, thoughtfulness, sensitivity, caring and smile. Sue cherished and loved her family in Kansas City, as well as her closest friends, childhood and college friends and neighbors. In later life, she travelled with friends through Elderhostel visiting Hawaii, California, Spain, and Canada. Sue was a wonderful, caring, and loving mother and grandmother who supported our family, preserved our family history, and maintained many of our family traditions. She loved the Florida gulf coast beaches and Green Mountain Falls, Colorado.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, John T. and Marian L. Schmitz. She is survived by her children, Steven Giannos (Amanda) and Catherine Nothern; her grandchildren, Kyle Koochel, Clayton Koochel and Lynn Giannos Nothern. Cremation has been chosen with inurnment at Forest Hill & Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri.
A time of visiting for family and friends will take place on Tuesday, December 26, 2023 from 2pm - 5pm at the McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas.
