Mr. Montgomery was born August 12, 1925, in Sterling, CO to his parents, Robert Sr. and Syrena Wadsworth Montgomery. He graduated from Merino High School in 1943 and enlisted into the Army in September 1943 after he turned 18. (He tried to enlist when he was 17, but his parents refused permission)
A World War II veteran, Mr. Montgomery’s military training was in Camp Roberts then Fort Ord, CA where he became a member of the 41st infantry, 167 Field Artillery Division. His tour took him to Port Moresby, New Guinea, the Philippine Islands, and the occupation of Japan at Hiroshima, Japan 2 weeks after the drop of the bomb. Bob achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant as World War II officially ended September 2, 1945, and was then discharged/inactivated December 31, 1945.
Mr. Montgomery then attended Colorado State University 1946 - 1950 where he received a degree in Animal Husbandry and was a charter member of Farmhouse Fraternity. His younger sister, Donna Rea, introduced her brother to her sorority sister, Olga Barbour. This meeting would lead Bob and Olga to marriage on November 18, 1950. Bob began his career in farming, but his desire to work in the cattle industry returned him to Colorado State University for a Master’s degree in Livestock Nutrition. Bob retired from W.R. Grace/Farr Feeds in 1980, but continued his livestock nutrition work with several feedlots including Clark County Feeders for many years.
Mr. Montgomery is survived by his loving wife, Olga Montgomery, his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Mark Hatler; his daughter, Nancy Montgomery; his granddaughter and family Laura and Matt Roy; his grandson and family Tony and Audrey Hatler; and 4 great grandchildren: Taryn, Annabelle, Jaxson and Autumn. He is preceded in death by his sister, Jo Garrett and her husband, Donald; while his sister, D Rea Scudder, passed away just 3 days after Robert.
Mr. Montgomery’s funeral service took place on February 9, 2015, in Overland Park, KS in a private ceremony, with burial at Leavenworth National Cemetery. The family would like to express their gratitude to the neighbors, CNA’s, and friends who provided care to Bob and Olga over the years. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
