Jim Ferrell, age 94, formerly of Pittsburg, Kansas passed away on Friday, February 19, 2021 at Villa St. Francis Hospice in Olathe, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9:00 am – 9:45 am on Thursday, February, 25th at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 5501 Monticello Road, Shawnee, Kansas 66226, with the Rosary Service at 9:45 am, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am. Interment with Military Honors will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Catholic Charities of NE Kansas or Villa St. Francis Hospice of Olathe, Kansas.
Jim was born to Orville and Florence Ferrell on January 21, 1927 in Hiwasse, Arkansas. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 - 1947. He married Catherine (Epple) Ferrell in 1950, after meeting her at a roller-skating rink in Pittsburg, Kansas. He converted to the Catholic faith in 1956 and in 1957, he and Catherine had their first and only child, Susan. Jim worked for Hull & Dillion Packing Company for many years and the Bowlus School Supply Company before he retired. He was an avid reader, hunter and fisherman, and he also was a talented skater and bowler. Jim also loved to play pool and ping pong. Most of importantly, Jim loved his Catholic faith and he was very much involved in his church at Our Lady of Lourdes in Pittsburg, Kansas. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. Jim was loved by many including his caretakers in his last few years of life. He will be missed tremendously.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Florence Ferrell; brothers, Roy Ferrell, Stanley Ferrell and Dallas Ferrell; sisters, Helen Breedy and Ruth Thomas; and his wife of 64 years, Catherine Ferrell.
Jim is survived by his sister, Betty Masterson; daughter, Susan Straub (Ernie); grandchildren, Paul Straub (MaryGrace), Ernie Straub IV, Andrew Straub (Kristin), Matthew Straub (Kathleen), Daniel Straub (Laura), and Rebekah Romero (Josh); and 8 great-grandchildren.
