She will be deeply missed by her family; children Duff (Heather), Barbara, Margaret (David), and Tony (Rachel); six grandchildren Fiona (Matt), Bryce (Carolyn), Julie (Dorian), Michael, Alison, and Summer, and three great-grandchildren Maia, Leona, and Oden. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 68 years, Allen Duff Mitchell, sister-in-law Jean Dykeman and son-in-law Graham Glenn.
Marion was born on December 10, 1930, in Springhill, Nova Scotia. An only child, she had a love filled childhood, thanks to her parents Dorothy and Jaroslav (Jerry) Orlik. At the start of World War II, Marion’s father, Jerry, enlisted and spent seven years overseas. During this time, Marion’s bond with her mother, Dorothy, grew even deeper. After graduation from high school, Marion was thrilled to get a job in Halifax, NS at Engineers Nova Scotia. In 1952, she married the love of her life Allen Mitchell, a young military legal officer, who she met at Camp Borden, Ontario.
Marion was devoted to her family and passionate about her church (Church of the Resurrection, Ottawa). Her cooking skills were legendary; whether it was a small family supper or dinner for 30, her meals were always outstanding. She was a dedicated community volunteer, helping to brighten the lives of many people. Marion loved foreign travel, literature and art. She was very proud of her Nova Scotia roots, and despite the military postings in Canada, Germany (twice) and London UK, she always remained a loyal Maritimer in her heart. She will be deeply missed.
A private service and interment will be held in the spring.
Condolences can be sent to McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home and Chapel at www.mcevoy-shields.com.
