Maria Oliveira Sequeira Bettencourt

Maria, born in Beira, Sao Jorge, Azores, Portugal went home to the Lord on Monday, July 1st, 2024.

Daughter of António Dias Sequeira and Ana Oliveira Sequeira, sister of Francisco, grew up with her family and friends in Beira. She married her beloved husband, Artur Bettencourt da Silveira Sousa on October 6, 1951, whom she has now joined in love. They immigrated to Canada in May 1960 with their young daughter Saõzinha (Mary) Dowbiggin. Maria is survived by her children, Saõzinha and Brian, son-in-law Dwight, grandkids Kelly, Shannon, Ayden, Grayson and great grandson, Maxime.

Maria’s love language was food for anyone who stepped through her front door. She worked in fashion retail for decades and was known as an incredibly talented seamstress, and known for crocheting beautiful pieces. While she loved her life in Canada, her family, and friends here, she remained strongly connected to her Azorean roots. She is greatly loved and appreciated by those who knew her.

Her funeral was held in Langley, BC, on July 8, 2024.

In Ottawa, visitation for Maria will be held on Wednesday, July the 17th, 2024 between 6pm and 9pm at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Rd, Ottawa, ON K1V 1A6. Maria will be interred with her husband, Artur, on Thursday, July the 18th at Hope Cemetery in Ottawa South at 2pm.
