I just recently learned of Mrs. Cunningham's passing.  She and Mr. Cunningham and my parents  (Betty and Ed Chmielinski) became great friends when my family moved to Ottawa in 1969.  I have VERY fond memories of the four of them.  They are all now back together again and traveling the heavens.  Rest in Peace. 

Chère Léona, nous apprenons seulement maintenant que tu es partie rejoindre Dennis. Bien que nous ne nous soyons rencontrés que quelques fois, nous avons échangé de nombreux courriers de bons vœux et eu de tes nouvelles par Michèle, notre cousine commune qui a été fidèlement à tes côtés ces dernières années. Nous avons toujours conservé le souvenir de vos visites à Namur. Nous nous souviendrons de vos délicates attentions et de votre extrême gentillesse. Reposez en paix.

Elle a profité de la venue des petits, Agathe, Béatrice, Raphaëlle et Alexandre , avec joie et suivait avec attention leur évolution.  Elle q été une marraine aimante et très significative pour Jean-Sébastien.

Because they were both only children, my grandfather Robert (Bob) O’Malley was very close with his cousin Leona even though they lived in different cities.  I remember Aunt Leona and Uncle Dennis visiting my grandparents in Manitoba when I was a little girl.  I always enjoyed the visits as well as keeping in touch via Christmas cards.  Both me and my father (Leona’s godson) Michael always enjoyed visiting Aunt Leona and Uncle Dennis when we were in Ottawa.  

The very last trip my grandfather took on his own before his dementia made him unable to travel independently was to visit Aunt Leona in Ottawa.  They had a wonderful time exploring and reminiscing, and my grandpa spoke so fondly of that trip.  I feel so lucky to have moved to Gatineau on time to have enjoyed a few lunches with Aunt Leona and her wonderful companion Helen at the Casino.  I know my grandfather would feel so happy to know that I got to hear more about Aunt Leona’s career and to hear more stories about the time they spent together as children.  She was such a smart and accomplished woman.

Leona was a dear friend and we miss her so much. Leona, Dennis, Leo and I would visit each others home, sharing meals and wine or just spend a quiet time in each others company. Leona and Dennis loved our children and grand-children. She always wanted to know how they were doing. When I would tell her I have four grand-children she would laugh and say "no, not four, you have five don't forget me".  I was always there for Leona with love and support. On Sunday afternoons I would go to her place and we would spend hours laughing and telling each other the news about our family, friends or discussing the trips we took or were going to take.  
During the last several years of Dennis's life there were times when Leona asked me to stay with her just for support during these trying times. After Dennis's death nine years ago Leona depended on me more than ever. She loved Dennis so much she asked me to visit his grave so he would have someone to visit him.  For the last nine years I have fulfilled her request doing this every fathers day and on November the 11th. Now I will be visiting the both of you. You were a dear friend and will be missed both by me and my family.  My thoughts and prayers are with you always

Leona and Dennis were the loveliest of couples. Their love shone through when they hosted us. My husband Pascal showed up in Dunrobin with his RCMP cruiser and instantly bonded with Dennis. Dennis was a born storyteller. And Leona adored her Dennis. 
Leona was an outstanding hostess. She always made everyone feel welcomed and appreciated.   She obtained her bachelor’s degree while working full-time through her determination. Her many qualities contributed to her success serving Canadians as a Public Servant and paved the way for other Women to follow in her footsteps. 

She made many friends through her open heart. We felt privileged to see the Love between her and her friends. A Love which, in some cases spanned decades.

Leona, you contributed in your own unique way in making this World a more loving place. We thank you for your Presence, Grace, and Love. You are missed.

Leona was my first boss forty-seven years ago when I joined the Federal Government- Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce.  I was honored when she asked me to be with her during her last journey.  Last five weeks we spent together,  we enjoyed each other's company.  We joked, laughed, and had some serious chat and some not so serious ones.  She was a teaser and her quick wit was unbeatable.  A charming and graceful lady to the  very end.
Rest in Peace, MY FRIEND, till we meet again.

We had a special relationship with our neighbour Mrs C. 
She was  a strong, resilient &  independent  woman that we loved very much. We especially enjoyed our Christmas visits when my daughter was young. We are so grateful that both Denis & Leona touched our lives. xoxo

Over fifty years ago my brother Dennis came to tell me he had met this lovely lady and he was going to marry her. Dennis and Leona did get married and we became good friends. We shared so many good times together over the years. On Christmas holidays and birthdays a group of us would go out to dinner and celebrate our good fortune and friendship. There was always Mary and Jim Lafreniere, Judy and Mark, Dennis and Leona as well as Alex and me. On my sixty fifth birthday we all went to a restaurant where they gave me the best surprise birthday party.  Leona and I would go to the Legion every week to play bingo. Sometimes Dennis and Alex would join us. Sometimes when Dennis and I would have a fight, as brothers and sisters do, Leona would be the one who would get us to calm down and get over it. When Leona and I needed a hair cut we would go to Marissa, Leona's dear friend over the years, and she would make us look good for the world. Leona was tall and had a hard time buying clothes so her and I would go to the tall shops where she could find something that would suit her. 
 When my children Mike and Ann were youngsters Dennis and Leona would have them over at their place on a regular basis. The children loved to go there as they were treated so well. When the children grew up they never forgot their aunt and uncle, keeping in touch through mail and phone calls. 
When I moved to White Rock B.C, in 2015 Dennis and Leona were not happy about my decision to leave Ottawa so I promised to visit them at least once a year. I did do that and Dennis always insisted on paying for my airfare. After Dennis died, nine years ago, I told Leona I would always come to Ottawa to be with her  for a few weeks around the third of September (the date of Dennis's death). I have done so and will miss Leona so much now that she is gone. She is the only family me and my children had left to share our lives. 

My thoughts and prayers are with Aunt Leona.  We have terrific memories and it is difficult to identify just one or two... Aunt Leona was an amazing chef and the meals she prepared and the special occasions were fantastic.  There was always plenty of food and wonderful desserts!
I remember spending time with Aunt Leona when the house was being built in Alta Vista and I helped in the garden; I was a complete mess - dirty and full of mud and grass clippings.  A dunk in the tub was all it took to clean me up. 
A favourite activity of mine was movie night; there was always lots of buttered popcorn and much laughter as we sat, ate and enjoyed the movies. Then there were Bingo nights, Margarita nights and dining out at the Chinese restaurant.  I remember Aunt Leona and Uncle Dennis visiting the house in Prince George and it was a delight to enjoy time in our home and share a part of my life. I also remember the meals out at the German restaurant where the food, wine and laughter was tremendous. 
Aunt Leona always had time to speak with my daughter and I when we called and provided her with updates related to our lives. Her enthusiasm to hear our news was always welcomed.  We phoned regularly and sent letters and cards to keep in touch. Aunt Leona was funny, kind, generous, thoughtful and so much more.  
I loved her dearly and she will be missed;

Our thoughts and prayers are with Aunt Leona at this time. We have wonderful memories:  I remember one visit in particular when we spent a warm afternoon in their suite in Bonita Springs Florida overlooking the Gulf enjoying drinks and chatting.   Another good memory was swimming in their pool at their beautiful home in Dunrobin and then enjoying a delicious dinner that Aunt Leona had prepared (She was a great cook). On a more recent visit,  Aunt Leona took us to La Baccara at the Casino for dinner where, needless to say,  the staff took very good care of us. Whenever we travelled we had fun finding the right postcard to let Aunt Leona know we were thinking of her. We sent pictures and would phone regularly to stay in touch. She was always interested in knowing what we were up to and how we were doing. She was a woman with a sharp intellect and a great sense of humour. She was loved very much ... Mike, Leslie, Lindsay, Craig, Benita, Freya and Isaac.
