With heavy hearts, we share the passing of John Douglas (Doug) Eby on March 27, 2025, at the age of 78. Doug passed away peacefully at May Court Hospice, surrounded by his loving family. A man of unwavering love, dedication, and enthusiasm, he will be deeply missed and fondly remembered as a cherished husband, father, grandfather, who cared deeply about his community.
Doug married the love of his life, Barbara, in 1969, and together they created a life filled with love and purpose. In 1979, they moved to Ottawa with their niece, Lisa, and sons, Michael and Craig, quickly finding a welcoming community at St. Timothy’s Presbyterian Church, where Doug and Barb shared their love of music by singing in the choir. While Doug’s professional journey began in computing, his heart was always in sports. He was deeply committed to supporting youth athletics, dedicating countless hours to coaching and managing hockey and lacrosse teams, organizing tournaments, and leading local sports associations. In 1988, he turned this lifelong passion into a new career, founding JD’s Sportsline, a business devoted to medals, awards, and girls’ sports memorabilia.
Above all, Doug’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Barb; his sons, Michael (Marie-Hélène) and Craig (Leslie); and his five grandchildren—Mathias, Sebastian, Cédric, Aileen, and Charlotte—who brought him endless happiness.
A celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home and Chapel, 1411 Hunt Club Road, with a visitation from 1–2 p.m., a service from 2–3 p.m., and a reception from 3–5 p.m. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be live-streamed.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Doug’s memory to May Court Hospice and Music and Beyond.
