We are greatly saddened that Don left us suddenly on April 8 2017. Born in Evansville, Indiana to Arthur and Inez Mitchell, he was predeceased by his parents, his brother James Mitchell, his first wife Ruth Mitchell and his daughter Mary Mitchell. Survived by his daughter Wendy and her partner Kathy Ross, grandchild Catherine and by his wife Linda Hayes. He will also be missed by his extended Hayes-Gensheimer relatives and long-time friends.
A PhD chemist with degrees from Indiana University and University of Virginia, Don had a long career as a research scientist at the National Research Council of Canada. With a lifelong thirst for knowledge, Don was an avid naturalist, geologist, gardener, woodworker, photographer, bridge shark, expert tinkerer and problem-solver. Don was happiest in the great outdoors. He hiked the length of the Appalachian Trail twice, was a life member of the Rideau Trail Association, and led hikes and ski outings for the Ottawa Rideau Trail Club.
Post-retirement Don enjoyed the snowbird RV life, travelling with Linda on extensive adventures across North America. He was devoted to the business news and gained a formidable understanding of financial markets, grew orchids in the sunroom, and wore out many pairs of shoes walking the family dogs around the neighbourhood. Most especially, Don loved the time he spent with his treasured granddaughter.
Funeral to be held at Annunciation Catholic Church at 2414 Ogilive Rd, Wed April 19 at 11:00 am, followed by a reception in the church hall.
