It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Brian Arden on September 12, 2016. Brian is survived by his loving best friend and wife of 23 years, Louise (Davidson) and cherished daughters Olivia and Georgia. Brian, aka Big Bri, was a rock, loyal friend to so many and, unquestionably, a phenomenal athlete. From his days as a superstar hockey and football player in high school to many years leading his teams in the decades to follow, Brian was captain. Born to lead. Brian brought his leadership traits to work, first with the Ottawa School Board where he spent 10 years helping children with challenges and connecting with a great group of teachers that would become life-long friends. In 2006, Brian decided to act on his passion for renovating and home repairs and opened his own contracting business. He took immense pride in his work and his clients were always appreciative of his craftsmanship. He operated his company until he was diagnosed. More than anything, Brian was an amazing family man, fully devoting his life to his wife and daughters and their extended families. He had a strong moral compass and passes strong principles on to his daughters. Complementing family life was time spent with a very close group of friends. He loved to put his skates on and was a fixture at the RA year round. A respected opponent, most likely to score the winning goal. Other loves included getting in a round of golf when he could or playing cards. He excelled at both. Even in the tough times Brian was the calming influence. He saw the bright side and deflected attention to others. In his last days he remained connected with those around him with his infectious smile and never lost his hope or his dry sense of humour. Brian was predeceased by his parents, James and Genevieve Arden, both of Ottawa. He is survived by his much loved brothers and sisters, Nancy (Dennis Good), Jane (Cecil Lebreton), Jim (Elena), John (Terrie) and Bill (Anne). He was adored by his many nephews and nieces, his mother in-law, Jackie and his Davidson 'sisters'. He was blessed to have the love and support of his huge family and his 27 cousins both in Canada and U.S. Friends are invited to visit McEvoy Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Rd, Thursday, Sept. 15 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A service will be held at Our Lady of the Visitation Church, 5338 Bank Street, Gloucester, ON, on Friday, Sept. 16, 2016 @ 11:00am, to be followed by a reception at the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to Lung Cancer Canada. The family would like to thank the caring staff of the Ottawa Cancer Centre, General Hospital and CCAC, especially Dr. Scott Laurie and nurse Sylvie. Dr. Laurie recognized Brian's undeterred determination and will to live and became his teammate in the struggle. He gave Brian the support he needed through the most trying times.
