teacher for 28 years (retired) at Edgewater Public, Pine Trail and Reed-
Pattillo Elementary Schools, passed away on October 16, 2023, after five+
years of a debilitating illness, “Lewy Bodies Dementia with Parkinsonism”.
His longtime girlfriend, Irene Pruzan of Orlando, was steadfast during his
illness. Robert, born to the parents of Joseph and Marie Salerno is survived
by his sister, Loraine Salerno (Midlothian, VA), brother Patrick Salerno
(Parkland, FL), nephew, Christopher (Fort Lauderdale) and niece, Lauren
(Davie).
“Coach Salerno” as called by his many students, graduated from Florida
Atlantic University (FAU) in 1989 and began his teaching career shortly
thereafter. His ‘kids’ adored him as he made learning fun! He would
personally purchase numerous materials throughout his years of education,
like so many other teachers, to further enhance the joy of learning and
teaching!!
He has many keepsake cards, letters, and mementos from students, who
grew up to be college students themselves, and would thank him during his
teaching career for his dedication to outdoor sports and physical education
fitness and relays, all happening in the hot Florida sun!
Robert will be laid to rest at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home & Park, 548 N.
Nova Road, Ormond Beach on Saturday, October 21st, where a celebration
of life/visitation will be held in the Oceanside Room at 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.,
followed immediately by entombment. Friends of Coach Salerno are
welcome to attend.
With special thanks, the family would like to acknowledge the dedication and
years of exceptional caregiving of our brother/uncle by Annette Toumbs of
Home Stewards Health Services. If there are angels on earth, Annette is one
of them.
